…is at the core of our commitment.  Digital Crossroad is dedicated to efficient design and environmental stewardship, for our clients and for our community.

Our Promise

Beginning with our vision to positively impact the community, Digital Crossroad was reverse engineered to transform the industry and this region.  From the adaptive re-use of existing real estate, to a sustainable design, and everything in between, this modern data center development showcases how we can build on the past to bridge to our future, while reducing the environmental impact.

Today, the adaptive reuse of the former State-Line Energy site creates a new DIGITAL CROSSROAD for Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland market.

Sustainability by Design

Closed Loop Water System

Digital Crossroad provides a progressively unique eco-system with triple tier cooling technology.  The primary cooling is supplied with built-in redundancy, using outside ambient air to efficiently cool the data center environment.  With further redundancy, the closed-loop water system draws freezing Lake Michigan water directly into liquid cooled cabinets, for in-row cooling applications that can meet our customer’s density demands at significant value.

Air Side Economizers

Air side economizers circulate ambient air and distributes it to the servers, taking advantage of cold Chicago temperatures.  Customers enjoy reduced cooling costs, supplied by nature, in a redundant system that is even further supported by our closed loop water system.

Storm Water System

Swirl concentrators have been specifically designed to clean stormwater from the site before it flows from groundwater to Lake Michigan.  There were previously no site management measures to clean groundwater.

PUE Ratio

Customer enjoys ultra-low PUE via our multi-mode cooling system.

Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy

Digital Crossroad offers Green Choice power generation from a sensible combination of renewable sources, such as wind, solar, and through our energy partner NIPSCO.  NIPSCO has adopted a Your Energy, Your Future program to eliminate nearly all coal generation by 2023 and offer 100% renewable energy by 2028.  Digital Crossroad customers can purchase as little as 5% or as much as 100% of their electricity from renewable generation.

Solar Energy

Solar Energy

Efficiency and clean energy are key components of our strategy because renewable energy derived from solar, wind and hydro-electric are not depleted and contribute no carbon emissions. Our sustainable data center design includes an abundant and reliable supply of solar energy on campus; thereby reducing our environmental impact while passing this savings to our customers.

Upcycled Materials

Upcycled Materials

Developers of Digital Crossroad successfully razed and recycled a legacy coal fired power plant, transforming it into a green data center campus.  Upcycled material created the foundation for the data center’s design including:

300,000 Cubic Yards of Recycled Roadway and Asphalt

120,000 cubic yards of blast furnace aggregate and manufacturing waste byproduct

100,000 Cubic Yards of Recycled Concrete

Over 100+ Acres of Landfill Waste Re-Used

Adaptive Re-Use Development

The former State Line power plant was an architectural masterpiece, delivering best in the world energy to power the lives in the region and herald the advancement of the industrial age. Rising from the ashes of the energy-generating behemoth, the new Digital Crossroad ushers in the digital age as a technology incubator, alternative energy campus, and home for the cloud in Indiana.

Community Impact

The Digital Crossroad campus is a transformational epicenter for northwest Indiana, as the state transitions from its manufacturing past to a digital crossroad of America.  Legislative powers were galvanized statewide to bring industry leading incentives to fruition, pivoting business in the state toward the development of future technology.

In addition, to heralding a new digital age for the state of Indiana, the Digital Crossroad site was also conceived to positively impact the local community in a number of ways.  To begin, this project will funnel an anticipated $200,000,000 infusion into the local community, over the next 5 years ($800,000 per week).  To support the local workforce and in recognition of the diligence of union workers, all construction jobs at the campus are union jobs.  Our commitment to the environment is also a promise to the community.  Cutting edge engineering  fueled the design of our closed-loop cooling system, that will introduce no pollutants into the environment and utilizes the iconic Lake Michigan as a source for unlimited cooling.  Public shoreline access continues on the site with over 6 acres of green space/bike paths, where none existed prior.   In addition, our partnership with Purdue Northwestern provides a dynamic learning environment right on the Digital Crossroad campus, as research  and collaborative learning flows from the on-site greenhouse developed to funnel carbon emission into plant growth.

This campus was engineered to be sustainable by design and developed with an eco-conscious footprint that will positively impact the community, inspiring ingenuity and digital enterprise for years to come.
